Glory Is The End ! - PHOTOS

Winter early 1940

43 Squadron are based in Acklington in the very cold winter. This Hurricane FE-E L1849 still has the early 2 bladed wooden prop.

The groundcrew tore down a door from a hut and used a tractor to drag the door down the runway every morning to clear the snow away, making 43 Sqdn one of the few available for action from first light in this terrible weather.

This aircraft was lost on 7th July 1940.

Flt Sgt James Hallowes - one of 43 Sqdn's top ace pilots.

He was awarded the DFM in June 1940 for shooting down an enemy plane as he was about to bail out of his own battle damaged Hurricane.

Seeing a German plane fly right in front of him as he was climbing out of his plane, he got back into his seat shot down the enemy then bailed out and took to his parachute!

The aircraft was finally written off in a training accident in May 1943.

Notice the very unsafe methods to jack up the plane as it's worked on!
